Short bio
I was born
in Trento (Italy) and received the Laurea in
Theoretical Physics from
the University of
Trento in 1985.
Then I moved to the USA, where I received
the Ph. D. degree in Computer Science and Neural Networks from the
California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
in 1990.
I organize research initiatives in the area of
machine learning and intelligent optimization (LION) and reactive search optimization (RSO) heuristics.
My passion is to use data to build flexible models and extract actionable knowledge (machine learning),
exploit knowledge to automate the discovery of improving solutions (intelligent optimization),
connect insight to decisions and actions.
I am the director of the LION lab: machine Learning and Intelligent OptimizatioN,
author of
THE LION WAY,
Machine Learning plus Intelligent Optimization ,
L’Hotel Intelligente,
with a rich experience in startup activities.
I am
a Fellow of the IEEE (class of 2009).
A recent focus of our research is on the application of learning and intelligent optimization
techniques to tourism and hospitality, dealing with revenue and profit management
(optimization of pricing), optimized property management, intelligent customer-relationship management,
recommendation
systems, machine learning and clustering in marketing research.
I currently divide my time equally between University and Business.
The latest startup I co-created, and currently the most loved: Hotel in Cloud .
